Heart disease can cause the ventricles to "unwrap."
Heart disease, often referred to as Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), is treated in three ways:
- Medications
- Surgical procedures
- Implantable devices
However, there is a cure: Total heart transplant. Only 2,500 are performed in the United States annually. Donor hearts are scarce.
Due to this scarcity, a patient may qualify for a Ventricular Assist Device (VAD). These devices are seen as a bridge to transplant.
The current generation of VADs have rigid patient requirements. This is why only 3,000 are implanted annually.
150,000 to 200,000 patients are either undertreated or completely untreated.
50% will die within a year after diagnosis. The majority of the others will die within five years.
